A JOURNEY THROUGH THE GRAND EST, A TRUE EXEMPLAR OF PERFECTION

On Saturday, July 9, very, very early in the morning—just in time to catch the sunrise—the Garrigues set off eastward, but not without making a sunny, history-rich stop at the HOSPICES DE BEAUNE.

The group arrived at their final destination that same evening in STRASBOURG, at the CIARUS—a modern and pleasant blend of hotel and youth hostel, right in the heart of the city.

Alsace is a radiant region, rich in architecture and history, dotted with greenery in a thousand and one shades, and home to welcoming, passionate, and fascinating people.

On Sunday, in SOUFFLENHEIM, a potter—who also happens to be an accomplished horseman!—will demonstrate the craft in all its perfection, combining gestures and words in a breathtaking performance in his workshop.

Enchanted by such dedication and craftsmanship, the choir members will then head straight to their concert in NIEDERBRONN-LE-BAINS. Welcomed by the local men’s choir, the choir will take center stage in the local church for a (nearly!) perfect concert.

The next day, Strasbourg will reveal its secrets and curiosities, thanks to friendly and knowledgeable local guides, driven by a deep love for their city. The cathedral, home to the famous astronomical clock, leaves the group awestruck by its grandeur and majesty. The city center warmly welcomes everyone; the shops are inviting, the streets are lined with flowers, and the facades are magnificent.

The weather, which had been very hot up until then, brought a welcome coolness—along with its share of thunderstorms…. We had to improvise by buying rain jackets or umbrellas…. Fortunately, the boat ride at the end of the day takes place under cover and without rain, allowing us to discover the city’s imposing buildings—such as the European Parliament or the charming Petite France district—from a different angle.

Everything is perfect, I’ll say it again…

So, on Tuesday, Les Garrigues will visit Sainte Odile, who watches over the entire region from the top of her rock. First, a thoughtful and contemplative visit, followed by a hike through a beautiful forest, dotted with blueberries for those with a sweet tooth and offering lovely panoramic views for photographers. After a picnic on this sacred hill, a tasting of the region’s wines is a must, and EGUISHEIM welcomes the group in the afternoon for a welcome break.

The passionate winemakers will demonstrate the perfection of their harvests and their expertise. Right after that, the mayor—just as dedicated and engaging—will guide us on a tour of this village, which was voted “the French people’s favorite” two years ago. Families of storks even wave to us from the rooftops!

The day will culminate with a tasting of the local sauerkraut…

And since all good things must come to an end, we’ll have to head back, with our first stop at LA SALINE ROYALE d’ARC ET SENANS, which welcomes the group amid a downpour… But no doubt still under the benevolent protection of St. Odile, the group was welcomed indoors, guided, and treated to a rich history by fascinating tour guides. Even the picnic got to enjoy a ray of sunshine under the arbor in the large garden.

The second stop on the way back was a taste of medieval history in PEROUGES, in this timeless setting, where the group was able to stretch their legs—and even sing a little—before heading back south toward Les Cigales. As usual, our final meal together will be enjoyed over a toast to friendship, to thank Annie and her husband for crafting this perfect blend of discoveries, and also to celebrate our 25 years of friendship with the Garrigues’ Favorite Driver, Thierry Férard!
