ABOUT US
Open to all genres of music, the “Les Garrigues” Choir brings together about thirty singers—both beginners and experienced—from towns in the Montpellier region. Founded in 1982, it is directed by Guy BONNET. It operates as a nonprofit organization under the “Law of 1901.”
The “Les Garrigues” Choir gives about six concerts a year, mostly in the region. In addition, the choir takes an annual trip as part of exchange programs with other choirs (in France, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Spain, etc.) with the goal of sharing different ways of experiencing music.
Operating Principles
# The choir director and singers work according to a teaching method based on listening and learning by ear. Knowledge of music theory is therefore not required.# No sheet music is used during concerts.# Improvement of vocal skills through sessions dedicated to vocal technique led by Guy Bonnet.# Introduction to music reading through “musical language”
Repertoire
# Songs from the French Renaissance# Traditional songs: Occitania, Italy, Hungary, …# Negro spirituals# Excerpts from classical works: Pachelbel’s Magnificat … # Contemporary compositions# Mixed choirs and same-voice choirs (men or women)
Collaboration with a string quartet for certain pieces in the repertoire.
Rehearsals
# Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Saint Bauzille de Montmel, except during school breaks.# One Saturday afternoon per month.
